High Performance Packaging’s PEAK Program

“Capture the PEAK” is our saying for ensuring overall equipment effectiveness over time. We partner with every customer we have to ensure our equipment delivers high quality yields with fewer issues over time. Your OEE line improvement metrics of availability, performance, and quality will increase when you work through our PEAK program.

PEAK stands for Packaging Excellence Achievement Know-how to provide you with the up-to-date knowledge and skill set your company needs to get the most out of your packaging equipment training. Whether you’re a machine operator or maintenance personnel, this customized packaging equipment training program is worth its salt.

PEAK Program Steps

The program features three steps to increase ROI (return on investment) in a measurable way. We can accomplish this by working with you to develop strategies to reduce downtime due to equipment failures and malfunctions, cost overruns, and inefficiencies.

Step 1 We work with you to evaluate the total packaging operation. We assess everything from your personnel, product, equipment and current processes. In this initial step, we take the time to recognize shortcomings and do some brainstorming to get to the root of your productivity problems.

Step 2 We help you prepare for the implementation of new strategies for performance enhancement. Our job is to help you find solutions by improving packaging efficiency, product quality, and asset utilization, and teaching shop floor staff necessary skills.

Step 3 At this point, we work with you to implement the changes discussed in the first two steps and measure the performance against baseline numbers. Any extra optimizations that need to be tweaked will be addressed before we leave.

The program may take a few weeks or a few months to complete, depending on your company’s size. We work alongside you every step of the way to ensure quality, skills, and standards are being met to improve your OEE metrics in a measurable way.

After the Program

Upon completion of the PEAK program, High Performance Packaging will continue to work with your company to provide the necessary ongoing training and preventative maintenance for your personnel and equipment. We will cycle through the PEAK process as needed in the future to provide continual optimization and help you buy used packaging machines in the future as your company grows.

How Can You Increase Your Line Speeds?

Packaging Equipment from High Performance Packaging

In your line of work, time equals money. The more product you can package in a certain time frame, the better. Increasing your line speeds, for that reason alone, is a great thing. But how do you do it? There are a few different ways, and once you know these helpful tips, you’ll be surprised you didn’t look into it earlier.

First Things First: Training

The first thing you can do to increase your line speeds is to ensure that all of your employees are adequately trained on the machinery you’re using. If they have any hesitancy when it comes to doing their work, this can snowball and waste a lot of time over the course of a day, a week, or a month. Another thing to consider is to train employees on more than just the machine they primarily use—that way, if someone is out sick, another employee can easily take their place, resulting in no downtime.

Identify Slow Spots – Monitor the Line

Next, you’ll want to monitor your line closely to identify any slow spots. This can be done either manually or with cameras to reveal places where the line slows down. This could be a scale that isn’t accurate enough to move packages along quickly, a capping machine that has trouble fitting the caps to the container, or any number of other sections that don’t work as efficiently as they could. Once you identify the problem areas, you’ll know what you need to do next.

Automate Time-Costing Sections

Once you’ve located problem areas, you’ll be able to make decisions regarding what to do to remedy the issue. For instance, if it’s an issue of a part being worn down, you can replace the part. If the entire machine is working improperly, you can talk to a technician about repairs or replacement, if that’s necessary. If you’re noticing a bigger problem—for instance, your team has to manually add caps to containers instead of letting a machine do it, you can decide to automate that part of the line.

Boost Employee Morale

Finally, another step you can take to help speed up the work process in your plant is to boost employee morale. This is a bit more involved, but happy employees who feel like their job is important and necessary will feel more inclined to do their work better and more quickly. Look into ways to improve your staff’s attitude and morale, and you might be pleasantly surprised at how much productivity can increase.

Cut Out the Middle Man: Purchase Packaging Materials from Your Machine Vendor

When you work in an industry that requires machinery and packaging materials to get your product onto shelves or into the hands of your customers, you know that there are sometimes unique challenges that you’ll have to face. One of those challenges may someday be not being able to get the proper packaging materials from your regular supplier, being sent the wrong material, or material for your machine being on backorder. This can create a serious snag in your production schedule, since if you can’t get a hold of the packaging, you can’t package or send out your products. This can cost you a lot of money, not to mention it can cause you to miss deadlines, which can leave you with unhappy customers. If this has already happened to you, or you’re afraid of when it might, you’re not helpless—you can start getting your packing materials from the vendor that sold you your machines! That way, the materials will always be compatible with your machines, and you’ll always be able to get it on time.

Saving Time and Money

Aside from saving you the hassle of having to deal with having to find an alternate source of materials, buying directly from your machine vendor can be helpful because you can rest easy knowing they’ll always have the ideal packaging materials for your particular machine. Because machinery vendors know what their clients are packaging (or at least can find out very easily), they’ll be able to keep stock of what materials might be sought after, which can save you time since you won’t have to wait for a third-party supplier to find out what it is you need before ordering it themselves.

A Range of Different materials Available

If you’re interested in finding a newer, perhaps more efficient material for your needs, a third party supplier might not know where to point you—particularly if they are just used to offering up what they’ve got in stock. A machine vendor might have a better idea of what will work best for your particular application, especially if you’ve got a unique product or tricky package to work with. In this instance, a machine vendor will be able to suggest the best type of material, leaving the guesswork out, which can save you the headache of trial and error.

If you’re looking for a way to simplify your packaging line and materials supply chain, purchasing directly from the vendor you bought machines from is a great way to do just that. Contact High Performance Packaging for more information.

Promote Safety and Save Money with Used Code Date Printers

Used Code Date Printers from HP Packaging

When you are in the business of packaging food, it’s your responsibility to ensure that the product you sell is not spoiled or unsafe by the time it reaches distributors and customers. For that reason, printing a use-by or sell-by date on food products is common, standard practice to ensure safety.  Code date printers are one commonly used machine for printing these dates, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck paying top dollar if you need them for your products. Instead, consider purchasing used equipment.

Top Brands and Reliable Machines

Many people think that buying used packaging machinery and accessories is a sort of “get what you pay for” situation, by which saving money means you’re getting an inferior, unreliable or damaged machine. That’s not the case when you purchase from High Performance Packaging, however. Our stock of inkjet and thermal transfer code date printers includes top brands that you can trust, such as Videojet, Markem, Norwood and more. These printers can be easily integrated into your packaging line, and work to promote safety. Having clearly printed dates alerts consumers when the products they are purchasing will expire and when it will no longer be considered safe or advisable to consume. Dates are printed on myriad products, from pharmaceuticals to foods and more, so it’s important to have a reliable machine for printing the dates legibly.

Printing directly on the product or product’s packaging has its own set of challenges, and these machines meet those requirements—for instance, some products like eggs need to be code-date printed with food-grade inks. Some other products and packages that code-date printers are compatible with include:

  • Packaged, prepared food
  • Pet food
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Dairy products
  • Cosmetics and personal care items

Aside from consumable products, code date printers are also used on industrial packaging, for instance on cables and pipes, chemicals and electrical/electronic components. Regardless of your specific application, when you need a reliable code date printer, purchasing used is a great way to get that quality without overspending.

Why Purchase Used?

Used machinery, when purchased from a reputable seller, can give you the option to get a machine that was previously out of your reach due to budget concerns. Used machinery that’s being resold is often in great condition, lightly used with a lot of years left in it. A common misconception is that purchasing used machines just means inheriting someone else’s problems, but a lot of the time, used machinery is just from a user who needed something else to suit their needs a bit better. Purchasing used machines such as code date printers from High Performance Packaging is a great way to get the machines you’ve been looking at and considering purchasing at a lower cost than you’d spend if you were buying new. An additional benefit is that HP Packaging offers training and technical support, perfect for getting your new machine up and running efficiently. We also offer troubleshooting services, preventative maintenance and performance improvement programs to help enhance your packaging line’s overall efficiency.

Which is More Useful for Your Business: HFFS or VFFS Machines?

The benefits of the horizontal and vertical fill machines depend on the products themselves
The benefits of the horizontal and vertical fill machines depend on the products themselves

If you’re in the business of packaging products into containers and shipping them off, you know that it’s important to make sure your machines are working at optimal levels of efficiency. When it comes to choosing the machines your company uses, one of the choices you might have to make is between a horizontal form fill and seal machine and a vertical form fill and seal machine. Of course, the benefits of each will depend on the actual product you need to package, such as whether you’re in the food industry or you’re packaging non-food items.

Why Are VFFS Machines Better for Food Industry Products?

Because so many food products are sold by weight, packaging them horizontally isn’t often the most efficient way of doing so. Instead, vertical form fill and seal machines allow the product to be sorted out and weighed into the container easily, partially thanks to gravity. Horizontal form fill and seal machines are typically better suited for products that are heavier, as they rely on a conveyer belt rather than a feeding spout. Vertical FFS machines are used for things like candy, condiment packets, and loose products that may be difficult to handle manually, such as sugar.

Should You Choose an HFFS Machine?

If you’re in a business that packages products such as vacuum packed products, including some food products such as frozen pizzas or hot dogs, as well as other, non-food products like magazines, electrical or hardware products, plastic silverware packages, and much, much more. When your product is heavier or needs to be vacuum-sealed, laying it on a flat surface to be packaged tends to be more efficient. This type of packaging is typically also better suited to products that have a limited amount of pieces – things like sugar, as previously mentioned, would not fare well if they were packaged with a horizontal form fill and seal machine.

Depending on the business you’re in, one machine may be the clear winner. However, if you’re still unsure of whether you would benefit more from a horizontal or a vertical form fill and seal machine, feel free to contact High Performance Packaging. We can give you more information and help you come to the best decision for your particular product and business.

Optimizing Your Packaging Line for Maximum Efficiency

Maintain productivity by routinely checking equipment status for breaks in need of repair
Maintain productivity by routinely checking equipment status for breaks in need of repair

When your goal for your business is to optimize your packaging line for maximum efficiency and output, there are a few ways to go about doing this. Maintaining efficiency is key for ensuring that your business is doing all it can with its budget, and when your packaging process involves using multiple machines, it’s important to make sure each machine is working its best.

Operator Training

The first step toward making sure each machine is being used to its full capacity is providing operator training to your employees.  At High Performance Packaging, we are proud to offer our clients operator and maintenance training to increase the skills of your staff.  We are fully versed in all the machines we sell, which means we’ll be able to pass that information on to you.

Preventative Maintenance

In order to maintain the highest level of productivity, it’s also essential to schedule preventative maintenance for the machines in your packaging line. Much like you bring you car in for oil changes and tune-ups, preventative maintenance for packaging machinery can help ward off bigger problems or necessary repairs down the line. Maintaining machinery is the best way to ensure efficiency—when the machines are running smoothly, there’s no worry of unnecessary downtime that can cause your business to lose money.

Performance Improvement

Another way to boost your packaging line’s efficiency and productivity is to make sure that the machines you’re using are the best ones you can use – whether you need to upgrade or not. You may think that your budget doesn’t allow for purchasing new machinery, but when you have the option to purchase used and refurbished machines, that may change everything. Refurbished machines are the same quality you need to rely on, yet cost less than new machinery. But because they’ve been checked, repaired, and brought back to life, they’ll still last you many years.

Troubleshooting

Finally, knowing what to do should machines malfunction is important. This can save you a lot of time because if you know how to check various systems and parts for things going wrong, you won’t have to spend hours or days waiting for a repair man to come in and fix the machine. Knowing just the basics can significantly speed up your troubleshooting skills—and again, High Performance Packaging is proud to offer troubleshooting training on our machines.

What to Do When You Have Problems With Your Packaging Machinery

When machines fail, repair or buy new ones

When you work in a packaging plant, productivity relies on the machinery within the space working smoothly and without issue. As many business owners know, however, that’s not always the situation. When there are problems with machines, work can all but come to a halt—so what do you do when you have a problem and need answers now?

Contact Your Machine Supplier

When you have a problem or need troubleshooting help, a great first step is to contact the company you purchased the machinery from. Whether you need help with used Combi scales, Yamato scales, or any other brand, the packaging equipment company you purchased machinery from should be able to help you with any issues that come up. After all, they likely want to keep you satisfied as a customer, and helping you with troubleshooting, repairs, or even further training with something they sold you. Making sure you purchase equipment from vendors who provide great customer support and who will be willing to help you with problems, repairs, training, or any other questions you might have about a product after your purchase.

Purchase Better Packaging Machines or Consider Refurbished Parts and Machines

If your packaging machinery isn’t doing what you need it to, it may be time to upgrade. Think that’s impossible? It may not be as out of reach as you think. Considering used replacement packaging machinery can save your business a lot of money while still allowing you to purchase newer and more efficient machines.

Refurbished machinery has been used, yes, but the company selling it has also taken the time to clean, fix, and restore it to excellent quality. So, even though the price is lower and it has been pre-owned, you’ll still get a reliable, top-quality piece of machinery. What’s better, companies that specialize in selling refurbished packaging machinery are usually invested in their products, since they spent the time refurbishing them, as well as their customers’ satisfaction and thus will want to help you out if you have any questions about the purchase.

Repair the Machines You Already Have

On the other hand, if you don’t need new machinery, but your existing packaging equipment isn’t working quite right, it may need to be repaired or need routine maintenance. Bringing in a repair service is an easy thing to do and can get your machinery back in working order faster than you think. To prevent problems from arising before it’s too late, consider scheduling preventative maintenance services. You wouldn’t let your car go for too long without an oil change, and packaging machinery should be treated with the same care. Maintain it, and it’ll last you for years to come.

Call in Training Specialists

If the issue is that your employees aren’t well versed in how to use the machines, that’s an easy fix. At High Performance Packaging, we’re glad to offer training services for all of our machinery, so that you and your employees can get the most out of your investment. We offer training for machines including:

  • Combination Weighers
  • Auger Fillers
  • Liquid Filling Equipment
  • Vertical and Horizontal FFS
  • Tray Packing
  • Cartoners
  • Blister Packs
  • Overwrappers
  • Case Erecting/Case Packing
